How to Choose Your Wedding Hairstyle

The grass is always greener when it comes to our hair isn’t it? Many of us have spent countless hours and money straightening, curling, coloring, geling, spraying, crimping, etc.

I happen to love, love, love, blunt haircuts but I have wavy hair. People are always asking me if I’ve just gotten a haircut.  It looks different every day, depending on the humidity, whether or not I dry it, if the water is soft, if I’ve just rolled out of bed because I’ve stayed up too late watching Lost episodes… Thankfully, my hairdresser is my friend and she will indulge me as I point up to a photo of some gorgeous woman’s head and say, “that one, please.” Most of the time, she gently explains why such style wouldn’t work for me.  (Sweet Home Alabama was on TV last night and reminded me of when I so wanted Reese Witherspoon’s hairstyle).
How to Choose the Right Hairstyle
Most of us probably have a pretty good idea about how our hair reacts to various climates or environments. But, there are other considerations to be aware of as well. For instance, your face shape; certain styles look better on particular face shapes than others.  Also keep in mind your hair texture and type. Do you have naturally curly, thick hair or just the opposite? Other factors to consider would be your neck length, body type, formality of your wedding dress, theme and of course, personal preferences and comfort.
It’s recommended that you see your hairstylist months in advance of the wedding day to choose your wedding day hairstyle. Before you meet with your hairstylist, be prepared to show a photo or swatch of your dress and describe the wedding environment(s) you will be in. Is your ceremony inside a conservatory or outside in a garden? Give her/him all the variables of the day. No worries!  As an experienced professional, your hairstylist should be able to guide you! Collect hairstyle photos from bridal magazines to help explain your wedding vision.
TheHairstyler.com is an interactive site that is not only fun but can help you in your quest for the perfect do.   They offer a FREE Demo for virtual hairstyles where you can upload your photo and play around with different cuts, colors and styles. What is great about this demo is that it also defines the chosen hairstyle. The definition quickly describes which face shapes it is good for and gives maintenance and styling tips.  Additionally, I clicked on their hair consultation, answered 20 questions about my complexion to my hair type, texture, current style, etc; it immediately gave me feedback on recommended hairstyles based on my profile.   Cool.
Next post, we’ll explore veil options with different hairstyles, so be sure to check back!
