Our wedding team gets lots of questions regarding etiquette around sending save the dates! Here are the most-asked save the date questions we get.
But first, what is a save the date, exactly? (Pardon the obvious here, but it's good for us to be on the same page.) A save the date is a brief "pre-invitation" to alert your guests that they are invited to your wedding, what the date and location will be, and that you’ll be in touch in the future with more details.
Do we need to send save the dates?
Well, because we sell them at Truly Engaging by MagnetStreet... we're inclined to automatically say YES! But really, they are not a necessity. But if you are planning a destination wedding, a spring/summer wedding {high vacation months} or around a holiday, then sending save the dates become a practicality and a courtesy. They allow your guests time to prepare, plan and save up if they need to travel. Plus it can hopefully give you peace of mind that guests will put your big day down in pen on their calendars before other invites and events pop up.
When do we send save the dates?
Send save the dates anywhere from 6-12 months ahead of your wedding date. And, the sooner the better—like if you are asking guests to make travel arrangements, or if your wedding events may require them to take time off work or plan around a holiday, etc.
What do we include on our save the dates?
Include any information that will help your guests to plan for your big day! Some of the biggies include: your wedding date, your wedding website, travel and accommodations info (phone numbers, website info). Save the dates can also be fun! Make them pop with personality by including your favorite photo(s), a hint to your wedding theme, colors, and cool fonts. Choose a design that's flexible enough to include everything you want and need your save the date to be!
Do we send save the dates to everyone we know?
Most definitely not. Save the dates are only sent to those you plan to invite to your wedding. If you are not planning to invite everyone at work or everyone in your neighborhood, do not send all of them a save the date. Treat your save the date as a pre-invitation!
Does our save the date have to match our wedding invite?
It's up to you! About half of our couples choose to coordinate their save the dates with the look of their wedding invitations, while the other half use them as simply a fun opportunity to spread the word, introduce their fiance'{e} and have a blast showing off their personalities.
What are some hot trends in save the dates right now?
Romantic watercolors, moody florals, bold typography, modern mini calendars, and photos on save the dates are all the rage these days. But really, a unique save the date that you customize with your personal touches will out last any particular trend. Guests want to hold a save the date that undoubtedly has YOU written all over it.
