Social Justice…Non-Violence…Peace…Equality…
Unity…Reconciliation…Service...
Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. stood for these ideologies; he is honored every year on the third Monday in January. 2008 marks the 40th year since his death.
Aside from this day off of work and school, are you aware that there is an additional component to Martin Luther King Day? The Holiday and Service Act was initiated by congress in 1994, as a national day of volunteer service. Honoring Dr. King’s teachings about community, this Act asks Americans to turn “community concerns into citizen action.” From mentoring children, to fixing up schools to assisting seniors, everybody can help~ somewhere. For more information on this facet of Martin Luther King Day, click www.mlkday.gov . There are also additional links for the Day of Service regarding project tips, opportunities to serve, and more.
Quick Segue to weddings…
Many couples are opting out of registering for gifts in lieu of receiving donations for a charity or a special organization. Is there a charity, etc. that is near and dear to your heart? Additionally, this is a great option for second marriages or for couples who already have "everything they need." Close family and friends will probably be aware of your charity choice, but you could also spread the news through your wedding website, shower invitations and word of mouth.
On this note I would like to say “THANK YOU” to the leadership of MagnetStreet who encourage and support a reading program at Rice Lake Elementary School in Lino Lakes, MN. For the third year in a row, MagnetStreet employees leave work during the day to assist a child with their reading skills.
Involved since the beginning, Customer Care Rep. Lyn, commented,
“All my life I have volunteered at schools. When the opportunity at MagnetStreet came, I was thrilled. Children need one on one time and someone to help them build confidence. It is an awesome experience to see how they improve over the school year!”
C’mon everyone, let’s get involved!
Heidi
(At this time, the MagnetStreet- Rice Lake Elementary affiliation is an ongoing project unrelated to the Act of Service Day.)
