Destination Wedding, Reception Later
So, you're flying off for your private, intimate wedding where only your closest family and friends will be in attendance. You plan to have a reception at a later date to celebrate your marriage with everyone else. Does that sound about right? And, if it's warm and sunny, this Minnesota girl is shamelessly jealous...
Invitations for destination weddings work the same... communicating the formality, style, who's hosting, date, time and location. Find below two basic options and a couple ideas to get you started. You will then want to tweak, personalize and formalize the wording to fit your own style and special circumstances.
{Private Ceremony}
Consider sending 2 separate Invitation sets...
First Invitation Set
For your guests who ARE invited to your private ceremony & reception
Mr. and Mrs. Barclay Adams
request the honor of your presence
at the marriage of their daughter
Samantha J. Adams
and
Josiah P. Smith

Second Invitation Set
For your guests who are ONLY invited to your at-home reception {sent day of wedding or soon after}
Mr. and Mrs. Barclay Adams
have the honor of announcing
the marriage of their daughter
Samantha J. Adams
to
Josiah P. Smith
on July 23, 2011
The couple was joined in marriage
in a private ceremony in
Negril, Jamaica
Please join them for a reception
celebrating their marriage
on August 23, 2011

Another Idea
In lieu of a second set of Invitations, you could also send out Wedding Announcements with Reception Cards mailed on the day of the wedding or soon afterward.
Reception Cards are used when the reception takes place separate from the ceremony. Your Reception Card could give additional details but should be designed and printed in the same style and paper as the Invitation.
Wording
Mr. and Mrs. Barclay Smith request the honor of your presence at a celebration of their marriage Saturday, August 23, 2011 at 6:00 p.m. at the Four Seasons Restaurant in Duluth Minnesota.
Don't forget to include RSVP cards!
Sweeten your romantic getaway and depending on the formality, include a stanza from a poem of love, romance, or a simple metaphor of your special setting on your Invitation.
