Victorian Wedding Theme

My husband brought home an old in fantastic shape newspaper from June 14, 1937. It was retrieved from a home  currently being remodeled.  It's enormous and interesting.  The front page is full of celebrations, tragedies, "bandits" as well as sweet stories and announcements... One of two announcements that caught my eye was the golden anniversary {50 years} of a Minneapolis couple.  If my math serves me right and it's 1937, that means they were married in 1887. WOW!

From what I can tell, the couple came from the east coast and from affluence. The paper had this to say about the bride's gown... ivory faille {soft, wide ribbing} Francaise gown with a train, high back and trimmings of duchesse {Belgian} lace. I just had to do some research!  Of course, I'm not sure of the fabric {I'm guessing silk} it may have looked something like an amalgam of the two dresses below.  Simply gorgeous! I couldn't help myself and decided to do a little more research into the early Victorian era dresses of the 1880's.  I must say, I am in love... with the frills... the layers... the elegance!

I want to believe they were effortless to wear... although I'm quite sure they were not.
