Savvy Wedding Advice

I thought I'd share this incredibly practical list of wedding advice I compiled a while ago from my cohorts here at MagnetStreet!  Full of wit and wisdom... enjoy the following tips and quips!

advice

{from Derek} note for the groom….. master the phrase “Yes dear your right”

{from Karna} Don’t let your ring bearer wear his shiny black shoes for rehearsal just because he wants to.  They cause blisters and will result in a crabby little man on wedding day!

{from Michelle} Ask one of your bridesmaids to carry your favorite color of lip gloss or tinted chapstick, there is so much talking and kissing going on and you want to make sure that you have some color for those candid shots- your lips get really dried out!

{from Kara} Consider an additional “personal attendant” for the groomsmen, if only to make sure they’re around when needed for pictures.  At the rehearsal dinner, remind GM to try on every piece of their tux the night before, while there’s still time to solve any problems.

Don’t order plane tickets {HM}with your married name. It won’t match your ID! If your BM or MOH are under the age 18, they can’t sign the official marriage license. Pre-arrange a stand-in who is of legal age. You can always bring a “keepsake” license.

{from Rachelle} “Do not plan to have your favorite Shania Twain performed by a string quartet. If you have a good group of players, you can get them to play lots of great things, even pieces in the jazz or tango realms. But piano arrangements of pop tunes usually don’t work out very well.”

{from Megan} Do not use a steamer to iron out the bridesmaids dresses while bridesmaids are actually wearing them, you’ll end up with crying mascara-faced BMs whose legs have been burned.

Do not drive a convertible to the reception hall if you haven’t taken your pictures yet, it’s not good for the hairdo.

If you order anything online for decorating ( i.e tablecloths) make sure to count them a few weeks before the reception.  If you come up short the day before the wedding, there’s not much you can do about it by that point.

{from Mindi} DON’T: sweat the small stuff.  DO: pick your battles.  DO: Say I love you before bed every night, even if you are mad.  DO: Go to “marriage counseling” before you get married- it's the best thing that we ever did.  DO: Get a great DJ for your wedding.

{from Jim} On the wedding day, many people try to provide good and helpful hints, but only listen to the bride.

{from Gina} DO pamper yourself, your maid of honor & your mother the day before the wedding with a manicure/pedicure &/or spa.  DO purchase a card to give to your to-be spouse the morning of your wedding day.  DO make a list with your personal attendant & check it several times.

{we'll keep this one anonymous because...  well, it's just plain tacky} If your father in-law says he has a budget for the wedding, ask him if you get to keep what you don’t spend.

{from Lindsay} DO warn your fiance that you will likely become bridezilla over one subject or another. For me it was the cake. I wanted a pretty cake, a small only-for-us cake. It was so stressful to me! And so we got one of my mom's friends to make one . And My mom FORGOT IT!  Remember that so little matters in the long run! I was so worried about getting the colors to match and be perfect! In reality, it just DIDN'T MATTER!  Remember that your kids will one day laugh at all the details (you wore that!?!) no matter how cool it is now.

PAY for the best photographer you can afford.

{from Whitney} Do not sweat the small stuff. If your flowers aren't the exact same shade of lilac as your bridesmaid dresses, that's OK! Everyone is looking at the bride anyway. Don't let minor things add to your stress level.
